Kahana Bay Splendor - Pati O'Neal

One of my earliest memories is of going to the beach at Kahana Bay. Located on the east side or windward side of Oahu, this beach has sugary fine sand with gently lapping waves, a perfect choice for small children. The beach park has lots of shade from Ironwood and Hau trees making it also a great choice for picnicking and camping. There is a hiking trail across the road on the mountain side that leads into Kahana Valley. The view across the bay is the subject of this recent painting called Kahana Bay Splendor. It is 18″h x 36″w oil on canvas.

This is the fourth in a series of paintings that I have done of the campus at Punahou Schools. This is called “The Chapel and Pond”. It is 12″h x 16″w and is oil on canvas. Now that I have four of them, I might consider doing a set of note cards.

After a busy holiday season, it’s time to get back on track! I’m looking forward to a lot of new artwork. First a little back tracking…. I wanted to post an encaustic painting that I was working on when I took a vacation from blogging. I love doing encaustics when the weather is cold. It is called “Trees of Life”. The apparent tree of the work is a representation of the monkey pod tree in my backyard that overlooks my studio space. The other “tree” in the work, is the coconut tree fiber from the tree in my front yard. I used the fiber in the background along with natural canvas. It is 18″h x 24″w on a cradled wooden panel.

On a separate note – It was exciting to when I heard someone mention they saw my painting “Staggerwing Reflections” in Aviation Week and Space Technology magazine. (First time I’ve had my name and artwork in a nationally published magazine!)

Have a good weekend!

I got notice recently that my painting  Staggerwing Reflections has been selected for exhibition in the Sixteenth CAE SimuFlite Horizons of Flight Aviation Art Exhibition which runs from January 31, 2011 through April 29, 2011. The exhibit is at the CAE SimuFlite Training Centre at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. I am honored to be included in the upcoming show since in the past it has included the works of aviation art’s best such as: Keith Ferris, James Dietz, Nicolas Trudgian and more.

I’ve gotten it framed and ready to ship out. Now I just wish I could go and see the exhibit!

World famous Kailua landmark, Kalapawai Market, at the entrance to Kailua Beach Park is depicted in this painting. It has been around since 1932.  The original painting has been sold and is brightening up a breakfast nook on the East Coast, but it is still one of my favorites. It brings back memories of my childhood when we used to stop there often on our way to and from Lanikai. Today, I still stop in for their great coffee in the morning and their delicious sandwiches.

Here is my newest oil painting.  “Kailua Beach Park Morning” is 24″ high and 36″ wide. This painting depicts the scene of Pu’u Konahuanui reflected in the calm waters of Kaelepulu Stream as it dissects world-famous Kailua Beach park on a clear October morning.

Here are a couple of small encaustic pieces that I did for the Matchbox Plus Show at the Cedar Street Galleries.

They will be on exhibit there until December 5, 2010.

They are both 2  6″x6″ panels mounted on a cradled board.

The first is titled “Glacier”

This one is titled “Whitewash”

Here is a small painting that I did for friends of mine.

Their dog Lola is sweet and loving, balanced with an abundance of energy

Here is one of my recent paintings.

It is the sunrise coming up over the hills of Lanikai on the mist hovering over Kawainui Marsh. Overlooking the marsh on the right is Mount Olomana and the Waimanalo portion of the Ko’olau Mountains. It is 18″ high by 36″ wide and is oil on canvas. I also have giclées and matted mini-prints available.

(I’ve actually been doing encaustics the last couple of weeks or so. I will post those when I get them photographed.)
